PRICHARD, Ala. (AP) - A south Alabama man has died of head
injuries suffered in a beating at the Prichard City Jail.
The mother of 42-year-old Frank Travis McDevitt said her son
passed away Sunday at the University of South Alabama Medical
Center. Marie-Reine McDevitt told the Register newspaper her son
was mentally ill and should not have been incarcerated with other
inmates.
Police said Frank McDevitt was assaulted Aug. 31 after he argued
with another inmate over changing the TV channel.
29-year-old Lamont Wilson initially was charged with 2nd degree
assault, but it was downgraded to a lesser offense.
Mobile County D.A. John Tyson declined to discuss the case and
said his office has not yet launched an inquiry into McDevitt's
death.

praying for him and his family. its horrible to loose a child no matter what the circumstances. even a 40 year old child. we start life whole, (Hopefully) and never are again. the peices start falling off almost immediatly.. praying for the entire family.

To start off, whoever posted the ugly comment is sadly uninformed of the crisis facing the Alabama Correctional System and the lawsuits being rightfully lodged against it daily. Alabama spends the least amount of money in the nation on prisoner expenses. That includes first and foremost, health. Correctional teams are understaffed, facilites are underfunded, and jails and prisons horrifically overcrowded. We have the 5th highest rate of incarceration in the nation, the highest ratio of prisoners to guards, and an incarceration death rate that far exceeds the norm.
It is highly likely that the facility is liable for the situation whether ever deemed at fault or not. In fact, I would sue the pants off of somebody for it. This reeks of staff and classification negligence to me. Good luck & Prayers be with the family.

I have been praying for him since I learned that he was beaten. His parents still needs all the prayers they can get. His mother is one of the most loving and compassionate people I have ever known in my life. Her oldest daughter died in an automobile accident about 15 years ago. How much more can these parents endure?

Well, just about everyone who goes to jail for any crime wants to blame it on mental illness. I would probably claim that if I had to go to jail because if I wasn’t already “mental”, I would be after just a few minutes of being locked up. Most people claim this “mental illness” just to get out of a crime or get a lesser sentence. Why should they have a TV to start with or why should anyone be able to change channels.  Even in doctors offices they have something over the knob where you cannot change the channel, why should jail be any different.  Also, of course they are going to sue or it wouuld never had made the news.

My heart goes out to this family!

Seems as though that jail staff should question inmates or the closest relative about there health conditions as they are being admitted into the jail house. Had they known his illness beforehand they might would have placed him in a confined room? Seems as though that would be a part of there admission process I would think. I don’t know I’ve never been to jail myself! How do you put someone in jail thats been diagnosed with a mentall illness in the first place? They have places for mentally ill people. Okay next who’s the relative going to sue PRICHARD OR MOBILE? Because I know thats the next thing coming.
