Bayou La Batre Church Being Rebuilt

Bayou La Batre Church “We Care of Baldwin County” is rebuilding a church destroyed during Hurricane Katrina.

It's a busy morning at the Gospel Way Baptist Church in Bayou La Batre. Volunteers from “We Care of Baldwin County” are putting finishing touches on what's turned out to be a very long project.

“If there wouldn't have been "We Care" here it would have been bad, I just stepped into a good situation,” says Pastor Scotty Scott. The original Gospel Way was destroyed three years ago in Katrina. Today all that's left is a dirt foot print and the creek that washed it away.

“This one is definitely bigger, bigger, a lot stronger, structure and we're a good ways away from the water, shouldn't ever have to worry about flooding in this new building,” says We Care President Robert Clark. Since Katrina he says they've built five homes. This church has taken a year and a half.

“It takes a long time to go through the permitting process course design process and everything else to start construction,” says Clark. All of the previous projects from “We care of Baldwin County” have been single family homes. Organizers said they wanted to work on a house to help dozens of people instead of just one family at a time.

“I think it's pretty awesome,” says group spokesman Don Benson. “I think we're going to help a lot of people, we'll probably help 50 or more.” Organizers say they should be done in a little more than a month. The new church features more seating, a stained glass window, and most important, a strong stage.
