WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama nominated for surgeon
general a rural family physician who has faced hurricanes, flood
and fire to care for impoverished patients along Alabama's Gulf
Coast.
Obama says Dr. Regina Benjamin understands the needs of the poor
and uninsured, making her uniquely qualified to be America's doctor
as his administration tries to revamp the health care system.
For her part, Benjamin on Monday ticked off preventable diseases
that have claimed nearly all her relatives - diabetes, high blood
pressure, lung cancer.
She pledged to fight so that, in her words, "no one falls
through the cracks as we improve our health care system."

good nite owl

You guys have a good evening. I’m going offline.

Regards to All…..

This job deserves and requires a dedicated ,poised, person versed in procedure and protocal and is a proven individual and the military is the best education a person can receive. It may be humbling at times but they are the best at what they do.And we as Americans deserve the best.We are going to pay for it big.
She might be a decent MD but that doesn’t cut it

Oops! You said O-5…sorry.

Outlaw…very good suggestions.

I might bump the rank to an O-5 or 6 in hopes of having more field level experience with larger types of detachments.

The only downside I see in the military is that some doctors at those ranks do not have a lot of “outside” civilian type experience, and that will be importatn in this role.

Good ideas you present.

It would be a military doctor at commander status with the experience to run an organization of over 6000 individual health professionals and world wide experience with exotic as well as domestic conditions and dieases who has the ability to work with others under any conditions including the battlefield arena. That has training in the care a chemical or biological attack against our country. And to have the abilty to deal with foregion countries in order to halt the migration of e-bola ,bird influenza ,and countless other threats to our society. They should be able to create policy and procedure for all of the armed forces on behalf of the United States of America SHE NOT Qualified.

I would go with “Red” Duke from Houston. (Texas Heart Institute), or Bob Carp (Cardiologist in Birmingham) if he’s still there.

I don’t know if Dr. Carl Eoffler in Cleveland is still around, but he knows how to run a hospital and an agency.

Dr. Duke has a huge amount of experience.

Otherwise, Some of the local people that rmseek mentioned would also fit the bill.

Bodet, Lightfoot, are excellent choices, and eminantly more qualified.

I’d like to know who Night Owl and Alabamaoutlaw feel IS qualified for this job and who they prefer got first pick??

I was offline a bit. Lightning strike and power outage.

Politico, your fourth post mentioned, “I believe one of the missions when Dr. Regina Benjamin first established her non-profit clinic included building a foundation so that it would be self-sustaining even after she retired.”

Someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t another poster, who has direct knowldge, say, “I am in the Bayou about once a week. I see that clinic sitting empty (and have for years).”

If that is the case, then her first goal is still unfinished, and she wants to take on a big federal agency?

Also, I notice you are citing refernces all the way back to 2002-03. that’s a lot of quick research in those areas. it’s almost like you had them pre-prepared or someone supplied them to you.

You are correct, she is the presidents choice, and I’m sure she will be appointed.

And, I’m all for a local Alabaman to get involved and be successful. I hope she will be.

As you said, “Let her actions speak louder than her words.”

So far, change and transparency is not being shown in this administration. It’s business as usual.

So, how’s that change stuff working out for you?
