A Dauphin Street night club could be forced to shut its doors, if neighbors fed up with the club get their way.

The bar fight took center stage at Mobile's city council meeting, when owners of the Alabama Music Box were forced to defend their bar for the second time in seven months.

"I have no intentions of apologizing for anything. I shouldn't even be here, and it's costing me loads of money to pay for a lawyer to defend me," said David Matthews, one of the co-owners.

Neighbors who live near the club asked the council to revoke the bar's business license after they say Alabama Music Box patrons were caught on a surveillance camera exposing body parts, urinating on the sidewalk and playing the drums outside the bar.

"They were a nuissance, and they had an attitude about it," says Chuck Nickles, who lived across the street from the club, but moved after the noise became to much to bare.

After a two hour public hearing, the city council took no action on the issue. Council members suggested a resolution wouldn't happen until at least next week.

And you guys need to realize that it wasn’t a compilation of ONE NIGHT. It’s at least a year’s worth of footage. I’d say three incidences in A YEAR is pretty outstanding. I read in the Nappie the other week that a couple was having sex behind Grand Central. If only they had a neighbor with a camera!!!

Actually I was kind of let down by the video. It was filmed since before last September. About half of it was people just dancing in front of the camera, woo evil, and most of the other half was before the owners ever got their license. It was about 10 minutes long, with narration . But they showed the same thing twice, both times with narration to make it seem 20 minutes long.

Really the whole thing could have been shortened to about 3 minutes with two guys peeing, one girl flashing the camera, because it was there, a guy playing a drum for 35 seconds, and one drunk either being thrown out or falling out of the bar.

It must be a sight to see; peeing, exposing and playing drums at the same time. I think the city sees through the complaints. A bar can sure produce a lot of tax revenue and a city in need knows it. Let the people have some fun and don’t mess with local businesses.

Yes I did type the wrong thing. Thanks for pointing that out bradlepik. Callaghans is an exception,it’s been in that neighborhood for years. The owners and family members live right next door. It’s possible for a Bar to coexist next to homes, but the Bar owner has to consider the rights of the homeowners. I would never move next to an existing bar, because I know that it’s a problem that is certain to happen sooner or later. I would also never consider opening a Bar next to some homeowners. Hopefully tthey can resolve this problem that makes everyone happy.

Violator: I think you must have incorrectly expressed yourself in your first sentence of your first post.

“I think that having a Bar in a neighborhood is a bad thing.”

It does not really support the rest of your post, or defense of Callaghan’s. There might have been some miscommunication. And I was not really sure about you using the whole proper name of Callaghans Irish Social Club, in the beginning of your last post, and then using the abbreviated name at the end.

Anyway, you are right they are dissimilar in many ways.

The place is called Callaghans Irish Social Club, not Callahans. Been going there since early 1980s when Pat, Sonny, Mary and Katie run the place. Alabama Music Box is NO Callaghans!

You’re right, Violator. Let’s shut down Callahan’s Pub!

I think that having a Bar in a neighborhood is a bad thing. However, if your clientele is mostly trash and bums this could become a problem. A lot of clubs have patrons that are happy just to have a watering hole to go to and converse with friends and new people. You have to respect the neighbors that live near you. Have rules and regulations that you’re customers have to obey. Keep the music to a level where it can only be heard by the people inside. Not at a level where it infringes on the neighbors. They can police their own bar, throw out the udesirables and refuse them service. If they are caught doing bad things, call the Police and have them removed. All of this could have been avoided if the Bar owner wanted to be a good business man and neighbor.

40 years ago, Brookley Air Force Base (Mobile Downtown Airport) was still open and downtown Mobile was a bustling with activity!

the correct quote of the neighbor was “He tries everything he can do, to get things back the way they were 40 years ago.”
