BAY MINETTE, Alabama -
A somber Wednesday on the campus of Delta Elementary...students and faculty lost their beloved leader. Principal Leah Ann Overstreet died Tuesday from flu complications. Sources tell News 5 Overstreet was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus before her death.

"She loved that community, she loved those children and did a supurb job in that school and it's a devastating loss to us," says school supt. Dr. Faron Hollinger. "She will certainly be missed."

"She had a bubbly personality and she was always positive," says Delta Elementary teacher Sandy Johnson. "Always greeting every child that came off the bus, she was always wishing everyone a very good day."

The campus is filled with signs of the loss....black ribbons, a flag flying at half-staff and flowers surrounding the flagpole. In the parking lot, Overstreet's favorite spot is roped off and marked with an assortment of colorful roses.

Overstreet is survived by her husband, son and mother. A wake will be held Friday night at First Baptist Church in Bay Minette. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday.

like you, I do not trust the Gov. not for one minute . I think this is a way of some kind of control. Like everything else Obama is doing.
Not trying to play a word game with you or anyone. I appologize if it seemed like that.

Since it is important to have a dictionary lesson here….mortality is death and can be the cause of death But,to appease you-the public has a right to know what underlying factors contributed to the MORTALITY. An epidemic is also something that is widely prevalent.Which at this point, without doing conclusive tests,we can’t prove this is in epidemic proportions (widely prevalent-because it could be seasonal flu,or something “strongly suspicious of the flu,” that tests negative for the flu) Better? I think everyone else completely understood my point. But if it makes you feel better…....

I question things that don’t make sense, and this doesn’t. More people should be questioning…..just saying. Oh,btw, the economy is rebounding and all is well. Well, depends on who you ask,and whether you want to believe reality or what the media, through the WH wants you to believe. Just saying…..

People, definitely be safe. But be smart too. I’m not taking any chances either, but personally I am not taking the vaccine either. That is a personal choice, based on too many unknowns and the way the government is handling this…..but I would not want someone to make their own decision, based on mine.

Traveling-I’m not sure why this is becoming some “word play” game for you,and quite frankly, don’t care. My position, regardless of whether you respect my opinion or not,or respect the fact that you are not the only one with an RN behind their name is this:  The public deserves to know the TRUE statistics about this illness to make informed decisions. We do not need to accept the governments and medias biased hysteria, until it is PROVEN there is reason for panic. I am not convinced that there is,quite frankly. I think the number of deaths, while truly sad, is misleading. I think more people die of seasonal flu each year, than H1N1. The deaths that have been reported, from reports that have been out there, have had underlying health conditions such as being already immuno-compromised, heart problems, etc. The media has failed to report whether this is another of those cases,or truly someone who was perfectly healthy that succumbed to this illness. The testing for the vaccine is essentially nil,and we are expected to be good citizens and line up for a shot? One that may not even be safe,or effective? My biggest problem with this whole hysteria surrounding this illness,is who is in charge of tracking it and reporting it,and what has happened over the last several months from that standpoint. You can’t even unequivocally say someone has H1N1 now, since they aren’t testing for it, only diagnosing if symptomatic. That is wrong, and misleading.

I would never attack anyone’s credentials. Just saying….

Well I for one am not getting the vaccine and never have. There are side effects that are worse than the flu in some instances.
You lost with with the part about knowing
...“ALL the facts related to a mortality (ie….underlying health problems, etc)”
Mortality is a measure of death rate.
I’m not saying all pregnant women die from compression of the diaphram just that is one of the causes.
You mean reading statisics right?  Not pregnancy reports.

This IS a news forum and an opinion forum. Re-read what I wrote, before you attack my credentials. I think in anything health care related, especially something that is essentially experimental-the public has a right to know,to make their own informed decision.

I agree with what you are saying, for the most part travellingrn-however I do not think it is need for the mass hysteria that this administration or the media is trying to portray.jmo The best defense is always universal precautions. But with this flu,and the controversy surrounding the now lack of testing for this strain, not to mention the lack of testing on the vaccine-the consumer should know ALL the facts related to a mortality (ie….underlying health problems, etc) And no,not all the pregnant women died just because they had enlarged abdomens from pregnancy-reports I have seen indicate they had UNDERLYING health problems also. Even MD’s are “officially” wink,wink-recommending the H1N1 shot-meaning they are doing what they are TOLD to do by the CDC,not necessarily what they believe is in the best interest of the patient.

This is not a news forum so before you trust what you read hear if you are concerned then speak with a professional.
Someone above, a “Nurse” said she doesn’t believe this an Epidemic..definition is below….
An epidemic is a disease that goes over a large area and lots of people. Epidemics are when a disease goes from person to person faster than doctors thought it would. If the disease spreads over the whole world, sometimes it is called a pandemic.

But there are some reports that people dying from H1N1 had a chronic health problem or in the case of pregnant women, the abdomen is enlarged which compresses upwards and decreases lung capacity. Be safe not sorry with this. Wash hands after touching objects that others have touched such as grocery carts and door knobs. Stay out of crowds. Be smart with this.

The possibility of MRSA is a good point Wait4Me. From everything I have heard to date,on deaths attributed to H1N1,all have had underlying health issues (even heart problems, or diabetes-that typically wouldn’t cause a problem) This has been true even with the children who have died. I’m not down-playing the disease,or her death in ANY way,and I hope no one gets that impression.BUT, I think we as the public need to stay informed on pertinent information, instead of inducing a mass hysteria (which seems to be occurring to a degree now). I,myself, as an RN, am not “sold” on the idea that H1N1 is this huge epidemic,or that for the person with no health issues, that it is any worse than the common flu.jmo But different discussion….

Again, sorry for this family’s loss. My prayers to the family, school and community.
