Mobile's Animal Rescue Foundation, or ARF, is letting you try it before you buy it. The animal-centric charity held a special "interactive" cat adoption today, 8/15/2009. Most of the cats were allowed out of their kennels for the event. Prospective families could get to know the felines before deciding whether or not to adopt. ARF members say they're putting the focus on cat adoptions for the rest of August.

“We have almost triple the recommended capacity at our facility and we wanted to get them out and find loving homes for them,” says Adoptions Coordinator Lynn Carter. There are special discounts on cat adoptions this month. The Animal Rescue Foundation will have cat adoptions for the next two Saturdays in August. On 8/22/2009 from 10 am to 2 pm they will have a “Fat Cat” adoption at the PetSmart in Mobile. On 8/29/2009 from 10 am to 2 pm there will be another adoption at the entrance to the Target store in Bel Air Mall.

No doubt it’s a good deal if you only have one cat but multiply that by 5 or more and very soon it gets out of hand, vet bill, shots. No doubt the vets earn their money but they are getting out of reach of the everyday person trying to save a cat.The male cat neutering was low compared to spaying a female cat, which was a Little over $125 for the spaying and shots. All this for a young female cat just looking for a home and food that evidently some one dropped off because they didn’t want to or couldn’t afford to put out the money.I sure like that program in Mississippi where they were taking and spaying and neutering that large colony of Ferrell cats and releasing them.In the long run they will have their cat problem in the bag without killing them.

OOps, correction: The series is in three innoculations, roughly $30 if you pick up at a decent feed store and give it yourself. So adding it all up, I think $125 is a bargain. Vets have overhead and staff to pay in order to care for the animals they may zip in and out. I dont know any vets who are making a mint off a once in a lifetime deal. That yearly visit is part of establishing a relationship and line of good healthcare for your kitty.

Carl, when I called about a male stray, Discount quoted me a price of $30 dollars for a five month old cat to be neutered. Rabies at B&B with Dr Branch for $8 and a $9 shot of “four way” plus the panleukemia. Not bad.

I’ve looked more times than once for a discount to have cats spayed and have always had to pay $125 to $140 apiece. To a VET that might seem to be a great rate but to me it’s a pretty big hole in the budget.I can’t save anymore homeless female cats and kittens and it is really sad to take one to the local pound. You have to sign the paper saying you know this animal will have to be destroyed (killed)by turning them in.I would find it extremely hard to do that again.

Discount spay and neuter has GREAT rates on fixing cats. There is no excuse. STOP LITTERING!
