It was a rude awakening for several residents at a West Mobile apartment complex. A fire severely damaged a building at Autumn Chase Apartments on Grelot Road Sunday morning. Fire officials say the blaze started before seven Sunday morning. They believe it began in a ground floor apartment and spread to other parts of the building. More than 50 people had to be evacuated.“This morning at about 6:30 am I woke up to run some kids off from in front of my apartment door and it was a big wall of fire,” says resident Jeff Garner. He says he had to climb down from his second story balcony to escape. Fire officials say the apartment complex, Red Cross and relatives of victims all pitched in to make sure everyone had a place to stay after the blaze.
The cause is under investigation.
