Despite the damage, everyone got out of this fire okay. “It's just an awful thing to happen to anybody,” says resident Jeff Garner. He says he opened up his front door Sunday morning to see a wall of fire. Garner says his stuff was okay but he had to climb down from his second story balcony to escape.
“Stuck my leg over grabbed the two rails and lowered myself down kind of rocked back and forth and swung down to the porch,” says Garner. Mobile Fire Rescue spokesman Steve Huffman says the blaze started at a unit on the rear of the building and spread from there.
“There are a total of 15 units in the building and we cut the power on all of them as a precaution,” says Huffman. 50 people had to be evacuated--officials say they all have a place to stay for the night. Seven units were damaged. The cause is under investigation.
