MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - More than 100 school students have
rallied on the Statehouse steps in Montgomery to help an
anti-smoking bill get off to a strong start.
The students gathered on the steps at midday Tuesday to support
a bill by Democratic state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures of Mobile.
Minutes later, the Senate Education Committee approved the bill
8-2. It now goes to the Senate.
Figures' bill would ban smoking in public places, including bars
and restaurants statewide.
One 17-year-old, Amber Peek of Arley, brought her inhaler to the
rally. Peek says she suffers from asthma due to exposure to
second-hand smoke, and it affects every aspect of her life.

Why can’t the decision to be up to the BUSINESS OWNER???? I’d be mad if I was a smoker that owned a business, esp. a bar or lounge, then I was told I COUDLNT SMOKE IN IT???

If people are that extremely bothered by smoke, they can go to NON SMOKING RESTAURANTS, such as Moe’s, McAllisters, etc! That way people that do smoke, and people who are not bothered by smoke don’t lose their rights…and possibly their favorite restaurants.

would the ban include the whitehouse?

Just add the word ‘club’to bars
and restaurants signs.  sign into the membership book and paid one dollar an get a one dollar off coupon. now would you like to sit in smoking or nonsmoking? we have sheep in office.

It’s all about the money. If the bill passes into law, the bars would have to police and enforce or face heavy fines. Do you really think Vivian Figures or anyone else in the state senate give a hoot about your health? I agree with Wait4me, maybe they should outlaw tobacco completely, make a $10,000 fine for possession of tobacco and give the money to the bankrupt school systems.

yes Doug, the two smart ones

banning smoking will do more harm than good, businesses are having enough trouble in this economy and this ban would only cause them to loose more customers.we are loosing our rights a little at a time and the land of the free is beginning to look more like a communist state, lets enforce the laws we already have instead of making new ones like getting drug dealers and child molesters off the street.

I can bet the 2 that voted against it were republicans wink.

By the way, what in the world does the “senate education committee” have to do with smoking? Should’nt Michael’s widow be trying to figure out how to fund the schools in this state instead of constantly pushing this personal agenda of hers?

Why can’t we vote this person OUT of office? Why does she continue to get re-elected? I would be willing to bet that 75% of the people that voted her into office, smoke. Ok, people who voted for this person, log in, and let yourself be heard. Oh,  wait a minute, I bet they don’t even HAVE computers. This will NEVER pass into law in Alabama.

The Gov’t, States, Cities don’t want you to quit smoking, they would lose the Million’s in tax’s, they get yearly. Heaven forbid that they tax beer and other drinks, cause it’s OK to get drunk, kill and destroys peoples lives and get a slap on the wrist, its OK to drink and destroy property, It’s OK to let a person destroy their body and their familys, it’s OK for them to kill their friends cause they can’t think straight when their drunk, Need I go on….........
