BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's three largest newspapers are
furloughing staff members to save money.
The Birmingham News, the Press-Register in Mobile and The
Huntsville Times each informed employees of the move on Monday. The
announcements were coordinated because the papers are owned by
Advance Publications, which owns 26 newspapers nationwide.
All full-time, nonunion workers at the papers are being required
to take 10 unpaid days of vacation. Workers will be furloughed on a
rolling basis, so the papers won't miss publishing any editions.
The papers have previously moved to reduce costs through
voluntary buyouts.
Reductions in revenue have forced numerous media outlets to trim
costs and labor expenses during the recession.
