Alabama Insurance Commissioner Jim Ridling held a town hall meeting at Theodore High School Tuesday night.
He has been on the job for 45 days.
Ridling says Alabama's governor's number one concern is cost and availability of insurance along the Gulf Coast.
Ridling says contrary to what people think, the insurance companies are not raking in profits. Ridling says it's simply not true. He says over the last six years, insurance companies spent $100 Billion to rebuild along the Gulf Coast.
Commissioner Ridling says the state is looking at insurance premium subsidies. That means homeowners could get money to offset premium costs.

If we figured our profits the way the insurance companies do we’d always be in the hole. They aren’t a bunch of dummies and they have plenty of money to work with.If they didn’t want this new insurance commissioner,he wouldn’t have the job he has.As I said about the previous commissioner Bell some time before he left,I bet this one too will get a job when he leaves with the insurance companies or a job related to them.Claycity I still can’t figure out why your taxes are so much lower than mine as we discussed some time ago.I guess Baldwin County gives the homeowners more breaks than Mobile county since our houses are about the same size but you have acreage and I don’t.I sure wish Mobile county would give us retired people a break on the property taxes.Might be something we need to pursue for the future, giving the retirees a little break on property taxes.

my homeowners went up by a third off the water and i am minimally insured on the water.i have done everything i can to minimoze my risk, built wind breaks to protect the main house, bermed the barn in, everthing inside, havent made a claim since frederick. i agree the insurance companies have gotten used to makeing a profit even when there isnt one.

Carl, they wouldn’t be in the business if it didn’t make money. I know the insurance companies will heavily lobby any changes that affect their bottom line. However, some of their charges border on criminal. I have a small house, a 1998 truck, 2001 car and a 2007 car and my monthly insurance totals $373 dollars. That would be a great deal of money if I only made minimum wage.

It is starting to sound like we’ve got another insurance commissioner that was picked by the insurance companies. No doubt after he rides this horse as far as he can he’ll get a higher paying job with or related to the insurance companies. It’d be interesting to see the amount of money taken in by the insurance companies for the last 20 years and what they have paid out.
