MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Supreme Court Justice PattiSmith says she won't seek re-election next year.
Smith, a Republican, said her father died in April and she wants
to spend more time with her 83-year-old mother.
Smith is one of three Supreme Court justices whose seats are up
for election next year. The other two, Republicans Mike Bolin and
Tom Parker, said they are planning to seek re-election.
A Republican judge on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals,
Kelli Wise, says she will run for Smith's position. A spokesman for
the Alabama Democratic Party says several circuit judges are
considering entering the race.
