TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Longtime Alabama coach Jim Wells has retired and will be replaced by assistant Mitch Gaspard.

Alabama announced the coaching change on Tuesday.

The 54-year-old Wells is the Crimson Tide's winningest baseball coach. He has won 625 games, two Southeastern Conference championships and six SEC tournament titles over the past 15 seasons.

He led Alabama to 12 NCAA regional appearances and three trips to the College World Series.

Gaspard has spent nine years on the Tide's staff, including the past two as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
