MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama has been ranked second in a
national study on gun deaths per capita.
The five states topping the list were Louisiana, Alabama,
Alaska, Mississippi and Nevada, according to the Violence Policy
Center. The study looked at states with high gun ownership coupled
with what it called weak gun laws.
In states that fit that definition, gun death rates far exceed
the national rate of 10.32 per 100,000 residents, according to data
from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's
National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.
Alabama's rate was 16.99.
States with strong gun laws and low rates of gun ownership had
lower rates of firearm-related deaths in the study, which found
those states to be Hawaii, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut
and New York.

Bought a Franchi years ago good wing gun great balance ,shoots where it’s pointed. I have a daughter that can smoke me with my own gun proud moment and a boost for my confidence in her ability.Even though we didn’t need to hunt to survive we love hunting and shooting sports in this day and time it is a skill that could very well save the lives of you and loved ones.

alabama outlaw—that was my plan when I first moved to Detroit MI, gun in one place, ammo in another.

Eventually, I quickly learned that was NOT a good plan.

Educating my daughters was a better plan, teaching them about firearms, and taking them along when I went trap and skeet shooting.  They learned how to handle guns and respect what a gun is capable of.

I can picture this situation .Oh Mr. murderer wait a minute while i get my weapon and try to remember where i hid my ammo.If this is your thought of self protection get youself a stick. When they come in your house their weapon will be locked and loaded.Teach your children well.Alabamaoutlaw

Education on how to use, store, and when to use a gun is much more important.

Practice, practice, practice…plan, plan, plan..

4thekids….deal with facts. Your comments run from A to Z in an apples to oranges type of comparisons.

On one hand you demand stricter laws (BTW, we already have lots of those), but you say that most of the gun crimes are committed out of rage or passion….not true…..

Do you think a stricter law would prevent one of those people from obtaining a gun and using it for those purposes….of course not.

Next, you think crime is on the rise because gun owners are careless and let their guns be stolen, then used in crime.

Look at some real, factual statisitics rather than the ones in that article. Again, look at who wrote that article.

That group is trying to mobilize people like you who don’t know the facts. They are a liberal left wing gun control group with their own serious agenda, and you are buying into it.

My gun, hidden in my night stand, in my locked house is no more likely to be stolen and used in a crime than yours with your ammo in one place and the gun hidden somewhere else. Lots of luck if your home is broken into. Where I am, it will take the sheriff at least 30 minuts to reach me.

Wait, bad guy, until I retrieve my weapon and bullets, and unitl the law arrives.

Will not happen at my home, or many others on this forum.

My husband tries to take me down to the shooting range at least once every 4 or 5 months. This way when he is out on patrol he knows that if something was to occur that I at least have the knowledge to defend both myself and my daughter. He also is constantly asking my questions, such as, if someone broke into the house and was saying or doing this, what would you do? Also making sure that the gun is put in a place where I can access it easily if there is an intrusion, but also in a place that is not easily accessible anyone else except my husband and I.

4thekids, I get what you are saying about more safety precautions being taken for those who own guns. I had a very similar situation occur with a family member that had her own weapon used against her when she was killed. It makes me sick to my stomach to know that something that she purchased and had to defend herself in a dangerous situation was ultimately what played a huge role in her death. I do think that there should be some sort of law passed to were all guns and firearms should be put in a safe out of the reach of others. However, just because this law is passed does not mean that everyone will follow it. As for taking some sort of class whenever you have a gun registered in your name, I think that is a good idea too. However, again that does not mean everyone will do so. Putting restrictions and limits on firearms is not going to make it any more difficult for criminals to get a hold of these firearms. A criminal will always find a way to get their hands on whatever it is they are looking for. The only thing putting restrictions on firearms will do is put restrictions on the citizens that are obeying the law. Like I stated before I think that having registered gun owners obtain the knowledge they need in order to be as safe as possible with their firearms is a good way to go. Also having them go to some sort of shooting range once or twice a year to learn the in’s and out’s of their weapons would also be beneficial.

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms… disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. ...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

unfortunately most of the time that guns are used to kill someone it’s in the heat of a stupid argument, someone is leaving their spouse, lost their job, mad at their teacher, etc etc…how many are to protect your home from a criminal barging in while you’re actually there? if you put that sign in your front yard saying you had guns, they would wait for you to leave and steal them and then come to my house and kill me because you didnt have a gun safe! there are too many legal gun owners out there that are emotionally unstable and dont need a gun and maybe a more in depth test will tell that…you go to traffic court because they want you to know what COULD happen to you if you are careless with you vehicle so why not have to go to a class and watch a video about what COULD have happened when your car or home were broken into or you left it out the coffee table for the grandchild to pick up??? some people need a reminder that sinks in, like a fine and not a slap on the wrist! if you’re such a great law abiding, responsible citizen, put your money where your mouth is. people hate to pay fines. if person has a right to defend their home…just be smart about it.

lol, i see i got some people really fired up…well, first of all…i have a HUSBAND, i’m a female! 2nd of all…i NEVER said that i wanted gun rights taken away…i SAID that i think that the laws let anybody get a gun and that we do need stricter gun laws and that MOST people that own a gun (out of fear) will never use it but, it will more likely have it stolen because from them by someone who will use it! why are in such disbelief that the article is lie because it’s us in 2nd place??? if it had been New York or Chicago you wouldn’t think it was a lie! wake up and smell the gun powder, the crime is on the rise here because too many of you gun owners ARE careless…who elses fault is it when your kid goes crazy and takes your gun to school to kill innocent people? who accidentally shoots themselves or a friend??? if you are in your home, why is your gun in your car???  if you’re not at home why is your gun in a shoebox or nightstand??? you think just because you have a right to own a gun, that gives you the right to lay it anywhere and forget and it’s none of your blame? I don’t want to live in a socialist society either…people are too complacent when it comes to guns.I’m not talking about those who hunt their food-people who use their guns on a regular basis are usually safe…it’s those who bought them out of fear and leave them lying around…my aunt had a gun & didnt make it to the nightstand before she was killed.
