“Air conditioner work is probably about the 3rd or 4th most expensive thing you can do on a vehicle,” says Hendry. Even with the extra work, Hendry says they do see people coming in who *think* their AC is running hot--when it's just fine.

“It's hard for any ac unit whether it's a home unit or a car unit to be very efficient,” says Hendry.
He says most air conditioners will only cool a car 25 degrees from the ambient temperature outside. He recommends using the "Max AC" setting to re-circulate cabin air.

“Where the hot air from outside isn't going over the evaporator core it's easier to cool off cold air than it is to cool off hot air,” says Hendry. He says cracking windows with rain guards helps vent the hot air too. On home and business units, technicians like Kenny Frye have been making house calls since march. Their business has doubled in recent days.

“Start turning them on and then you start finding problems either they don't run right with electrical problems or you have refrigerant problems,” says Frye. He says the hot weather makes for longer work days, but they'd rather be busy than not.

WE did have to save for a big generator and we put aside money for the gas for it each year as I am on disability and cannot tolerate the heat.  We can also plug in our neighbor on as he too is disable has little funds.  So we help him out too.

Not that I can think of southfan. I am just glad the A/C is on now! I think I may go try to take a nap soon, because I think when all was said and done, I got MAYBE 2 hours sleep this morning. Have I said I DO NOT like to sweat????

LOL about the Bath and Body Works lotion! I have a funny one on that one-I don’t remember what scent it was I was using, but every time I would go out to water or feed the horses, this one particular horse (Dolly, my baby)-would always start nuzzling my legs. Then she would act like she was going to bite me-but not in a mean way. She actually did nibble my foot one day-lol. Anyway,it took a few days, until I figured out it was the lotion. Needless to say, not using that one anymore-I’ll stick to baby lotion or unscented stuff.

I bet Absorbine would work in that case. I mean the kind of linament for horses. Plus it has a great smell.

The best way to stay cool when the power is out is to use rubbing alcohol. Rub yourself in that and it cools so nicely. I always buy that first thing when a storm is coming. Just soak a wash cloth in it and rub yourself (then put lotion if you want) then alcohol as you heat back up.  works every time. the bfa

Good suggestions, Mom. I keep smaller soda bottles filled with water, frozen and handy. Place them in your armpit or between your thighs if you get overheated. Along your neck is good, too. RM, there aren’t any medical cautions on that are there? Sorry about your power. UGH! I found using lotions that Bath and Body Works sells keeps bugs off me when I garden. I dont know what is in the stuff but bugs don’t like it!

I thought about checking into a hotel last night when my power went out. It only took 8 hours to get it back on. It was one LONG, HOT night. To the person who hit the utility pole and knocked our power out-thanks. I hope you weren’t seriously hurt, so feel free to come pick up the beer bottles you threw out!

The way I keep cool when the power is out ..wet the largest towel you have with cold water, ring it out and drap it across your entire body. I did it during one of the last hurricanes and it works wonders when you have nothing else to work with! Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a big nice generator..or the money to run the GAS hogs…

I don’t mind the stars,if I could sleep outside without getting eat up by mosquitoes. Funny,MY power bill was higher AFTER Katrina and being without power for 2 weeks.

Funny, I look forward to the lower power bill and the ability to see stars! Who wants to pay a high gas bill? YIKES!

WE have a generator that is big enough to run all the electricity in the house including my favorite appliance—the air conditioner.  Actually it is big enough to run the neighbor’s power too.
