People living and working on Lott Road in Eight Mile say they are tired of the crime and want something to change.

Ray and Janet Cobb tell us that their store, J&J Grocery, has been hit by crimimals 5 times in the past two months. Last Thursday, two armed robbers walked in, grabbed cash from the register and shot out the surveillance equipment. Prichard Police have no made any arrests in the case but say crime is not up in the Lott Road area. Police say they do patrol that area and they have only received three calls from the store since January.

The Cobb family is trying to get a Community Watch Group together and want anyone concerned about the area to attend.

Below is the information from The Cobb family.

Mobile County Residents Seek Leaders to Help Form a Community Watch Program.

On July 17th, 2009, business owners and residents of the Lott Road area will meet at J’s Hall at 5725 Jarret Road in Eight Mile to organize a Community Watch Program. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the town hall meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to ~200.

We are seeking law enforcement officials on the city, county, state, and federal levels to comprise a Discussion Panel that will field questions from concerned members of the community. We are also looking for leaders in the fields of education, corrections, and faith-based organizations to attend this meeting and possibly sit on the Panel. This town hall meeting is in response to a recent increase in break-ins, robberies, murders, drug activity, and gang-related violent crime, all of which has been well documented as of late by various media outlets throughout Mobile County. Victims of theft and violent crimes are urged to attend and share their testimonies.

Why don’t station owners make there stores to where the public doesn’t enter them?  I know the Chevron on D.I.P. has a late night window as well as the RaceWay in Tillman’s Corner..With crime rates the way the are and as desperate as people are it wouldn’t be a bad idea…I think all store owners should be allowed to have a pistol on there persons for there own protection…Surely this many years in business they could afford to put up safety glass or something to protect them…?
