FRIDAY 10:50 am
Mobile County sheriff's deputies have left the home where an infant was found dead this morning.

Lori Myles, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, says investigators believe the 5 month old girl's death was an accident.

Initial reports that a plastic bag was found covering the baby's mouth may not be accurate, but Myles says the child did suffocate.

The sheriff's office will release more details later today.

FRIDAY 9:15 am
Investigators are at a home on Schoener Road where an infant was found dead with a plastic bag over the baby's mouth.

Few details are being released at this hour, but the 5 month old was discovered around 7:30 this morning.

News Five has a crew on the way to the scene. We'll have the latest details on News Five at Noon.

Just plain tragic.  Accidents happen though, no matter how careful you are they still happen sometimes, it’s easy in hind sight to see what could have or should have been done or not done.  very sad and the family will suffer with grief for a very long time.  Where is the support of the community, friends and family that this woman and her children were living in someone’s carport? Not having a real living space big enough for everyone to have their own space I believe contributed to this tragedy.  Less likely that a plastic bag would have been placed in a crib with the baby but forgetfully laid down on a bed that is used by everyone, just a sad sad mistake.  God be with this family and guide them through the grief.

“Investigators say the infant was in a large bed, with a plastic bag close to her. They say sometime before 7:00 a.m., she rolled over face down on the garbage bag, and died.”

This was a tragedy that could have been prevented, but when you know some of the circumstances that this single mother lived in, it is really heartbreaking. The mother’s significant other went to jail and they lost their home.  She was basically living in a carport of someones home.  She grew up with nothing and I guess that’s the type of life she has only known.  Her other two kids were well mannered and clean when I had the opportunity at Christmas time to see them. She was pregnant with this particular baby at the time. I think all three kids slept in the same bed with their mother because there was no other bed.

Like I said, I’m not making excuses for this tragedy and why the bag was that close to an infant I would never understand, but after any accident of any kind, you will always wonder what could I have done differently and this would not have happened.  Maybe she left her there for a few minutes and did not think anything would happen. Who knows?  I do know she seemed to love her children and they were well mannered and appreciative of any help they received.

All parents should know that you NEVER put anything in the crib with a baby this young.  The child should be in a one-piece long sleeve, footy type sleeper without any other items in the crib.  The child should be laying on the fitted sheet, and that’s it.  No toys, no blankets, or anything else.  It’s such a shame that it takes a tragedy like this to raise awareness about proper protocol when putting an infant to bed.  I’m keeping this grieving family in my prayers and I do hope that they will forgive themselves for being negligent.  Who knows what really happened. Perhaps an older child dropped a zip-lock bag onto the bed after removing a snack from it.  Who knows what happened. It’s terribly, terribly, terribly sad.  Perhaps the only consolation is that this innocent child is in God’s hands now and that we all should learn a lesson from this tragic situation.  The lesson is that a child this young should not be sleeping with anything in the crib area.

It says in the updated report that the plastic bag being what covered the babies mouth might not be accurate. It does not take much to suffocate an infant. All it would take is possible that small blanket you put in there with him or her. Or even a small stuffed animal at the opposite end of the crib. I know that with my daughter’s crib, I had the crib were the changing table was attached to it and that would convert into a toddler bed and a full size bed while the changing table converted into a dresser. I was always worried about leaving anything on the changing table because once she got around 6 months she could pull herself up by the sides of the rails and even though I had lowered the mattress in the crib I would not leave anything on the table. I think I stopped using that changing table at around 4 or 5 months, because she was becoming mobile and I was scared she would just roll right off. I just put the changing pad on the floor and changed her that way from then on out. Still a really sad situation for the parents. Especially if this was their first child. My prayers are with them.

I feel so sorry for this family. I just can’t understand why there was a plastic bag in the babys bed. Am I the only one who questions that? I would hope that a babies bed would be free from anything other than a pacifier and a blanket.Again such a sad situation.

this so sad. my prayers are with the family.

Yeah. I know right after my daughter was born I was scared to put her in her crib because I was scared she would roll over and suffocate. Even if I took everything out of the crib and only left the sleep positioner and small blanket in there I was constantly worried. Luckily nothing tragic like this happened to me. However, it can happen to the best of us. Especially when they are that young and you are sleep deprived. With the baby being 5 months old I am sure that they had just finally gotten to the point were they were comfortable getting some sleep and not constantly worrying. Very sad and very tragic.

Too sad. . . . this makes my heart hurts, every parent’s worst nightmare!

Just read where this was an accident.  So sorry for this baby.  Prayers go out for the baby and family!

Oh my goodness!  How sad.  I wonder what happened.  I looked the street name up and this is located somewhere in Grand Bay.
