A frustrated fireman quits his job and tells us what's really going on behind the scenes at the Prichard Fire Department. "I think the citizens need to know. I don't think they have a clue."

He doesn't want to be identified but says for most of this week, 5 of the city's trucks were broken down and they only had one fire engine to protect the entire city. "It's hard but you work with what you have to work with."

The firemen say the department is supposed to follow the National Fire Protection Asssociation (NFPA) rules. It requires 3 people on a truck but they ride with two."I want this to help the Prichard Firefighters. They do a hard job and they're real busy out there. I just want em to be safe and I don't want anybody to get hurt."

We took his complaints to Prichard Fire Chief Mark Trenier. He tells us a very different story. "I listen to everything they say. If they come in my office, every issue they have is addressed." By the time we got to our scheduled interview, Chief Trenier assures us that four trucks are running. "Has there ever been an instance where just one fire truck was working? No. Well why would someone tell me that? I have no idea."

We told Trenier that we saw two trucks at the central station with their hoods up. He says they work on the trucks everyday. "Could have been the time there we were doing maintenance."

Prichard has 4 stations around the city but the chief says the Whistler locations is closed, most of the time. "From time to time, we'll move a truck over there and run out of that station just to give the citizens some fire department activity at the station."

When asked about the NFPA rules, Trenier says they are not required to have 3 people on a truck.

Our frustrated fireman says this story should have been told a long time ago. The problems get worse every year. "How has this been going on for so long? I don't know. It's just been pushed under the rug I guess."

Great1: If you have never been in such a public service agency you wouldn’t understand the code of silance. Within this line of work you show total respect to your command with out question. Thats just the way it is.
Its all about Trust and Respect.

Because you would think they would try to improve things. I thought maybe they would. I haven’t kept in touch much, because that place just fires me up. The fireman that work their are good people. Most of them anyway. But the dept heads are the downfall. I left because the pay sucked & it wasn’t getting better. As they promised it would. But looks like it hasn’t. That place has caused me severe stress over the years. As I am sure many others. You just have to let things go sometimes. At the time I figured it wasn’t my battle. I fought for Prichard for years. And to see the chief lie & say there has never been only 1 truck running. Brings back all my bad memories. We had to bring our own supplies to clean the station & the trucks. The dept was supposed to do that. The mayor has a so called “GAG ORDER” on any employee & threatens that you will never get a job any where else if you talk to the press. Well sadly enough. I am done with the fire service.

Why wait so long to come forward. If the citizens or Prichard were in danger and you did nothing until someone else came forward, it really doesn’t help me trust you very much.

I hate you all had to go through that. Its bad enough we as FF/Medics are put on the line but to have the talking heads lie to you. I do not blame you one bit for quiting just for the lieing alone. If you can’t trust them, as you know you sure do not want them commanding any fire scene you are on.

Sorry ran out of space. I can tell & show every little trick that the chief & the mayor pulls to run their little sham. This fires me up to see him lie on camera. I am sure their are several others that quit there that will come forward to prove this.

Let me start with the chief is a lair. I have been there when there was only 1 truck running. I worked for Prichard Fire Dept for 9 years. I quit a year & a half ago for this very reason. They run understaffed & work the fireman 48 plus hours straight. Which is very illegal. Legally they can only work 32hrs w/o time off. Unless a state of emergency. But the guys try to maintain for the citizens of Prichard. I was there when Prichard Fire was not paid for 2 weeks. We did it for the citizens. The trucks are run down & not maintained. As well as the equipment. We use to have to beg to get maintenance done on the engines. The fireman on here remains to be unnamed, but I WILL step forward & let WKRG 5 know the truth. Prichard lies all the time. Someday a fireman will get severely hurt because the dept heads negligence. This needs to be stopped. It’s time the citizens know the truth. The fireman work very hard there. It’s not their fault. It’s the chief & the mayors. Contact me WKRG.

Hi everyone,
For the city to only have one truck obviously is not a good thing. However, depending on the location of a call there are several districts around the prichard district that I am sure would be willing to help if needed.
You have Satsuma, Saraland, Citronelle, Mt. vernon and even MFD. Now, I understand there will be some delay in response for mutal-aid but they have plenty of help if needed.
I am not saying that having (1) engine is a good thing but like I said if they needed help they would get it.
I personally know for a fact that Satsuma has assisted prichard several times. Having (4) men on a truck my be law but obviously this can not always happen. What is a department to do - tell someone they can not respond due to lack of personel and let their house burn down. I know in the county we are only required to have a truck respond, now it would look bad if no fire fighters where there but only a truck is required by law.

Well danceflick, I am sorry to hear that you have family members who live in the city of prichard.  I am currently a firefighter for another city in mobile county and have worked for prichard fire.  When i was there the city officals did lie to us on a regular basis.  And one of them was the fire chief.  But the minimum requirement for fighters set forth by the NFPA is four firefighter per truck. You can look it up using the link i have posted. http://www.nfpa.org/journalDetail.asp?categoryID=1344&itemID=38833&src=NFPAJournal&rss=codes&cookie;_test=1

The firefighter is trying to hide his identity because he works under the mobile county personnel board and does not want to have any repercussion against him.  If he has anything negative in his file other departments covered under the personnel board will not hire him.

1 Fire truck? I have elderly relatives that have lived in Prichard for six and seven decades and I hope that they wouldn’t be putting my family in danger with only 1 engine.  I really find this hard to believe because I passed a wreck that was on Main Street in Prichard on Wed. I think, and it was at least two or three Prichard fire trucks there. I also know that this department works hard, bc someone from the Fire Dept. call my elderly family members almost everyday to check on them because they live alone.

If the firefighter quit, how does he know how many trucks they had this week?  And if he was telling the truth, why didn’t he want to be identified? Maybe the frustrated firefighter has something to hide!

I would truly hope that the Fire Chief wouldn’t lie to the citizens, if not he doesn’t need to have his job.  Also, I bet the NFPA recommends that you have 3 or more firefighters, but my guess is that it’s not required, so maybe those fireman need to brush up on their rules!

I have worked for the city of Prichard and Chief Mark Treiner.  Everything the firefighter stated is the truth.  I loved working in the city but for 19000 dollars a year there is only so much you can put up with before you are sick of it.  The city has alot of lying leaders working for it.  I hope the city of mobile lets prichard sit there and go under again.
