The Radio-Television News Directors Association has announced the 2008 winners of national Edward R. Murrow awards. The coveted Murrow award recognizes excellence in electronic journalism. WKRG won national honors in the Continuing Coverage category. Mobile's Makeover includes ongoing coverage of the port city's recent economic and industrial developments. The coverage focused on two of the biggest economic development projects in the United States. ThyssenKrupp Steel is building a multi-billion dollar steel mill in North Mobile County. The mill will eventually employ 2,700 people. And while the contract award is being appealed and disputed in Congress, Northrop Grumman and EADS were selected to build Air Force tankers at Mobile's Brookley Field. If it wins final approval, the $40 billion dollar contract translates into a new $600 million dollar facility and 1,500 jobs. The award-winning coverage and special report was produced and reported by Investigative Reporter Tiffany Craig, Photojournalist Jud Hulon, former Senior Producer Jennifer Dale, and Creative Services Producer Ed Smith. WKRG coverage included stories from France and Germany. Watch Mobile's Makeover.

WKRG won a regional Edward R. Murrow award for this journalism project earlier this year and competed with entries from across the country for the national award. In all, 54 news organizations are being honored with 77 awards out of an initial pool of 3,459 entries from several hundred news organizations.  RTNDA has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the electronic news profession. See complete list of 2008 national Edward R. Two WKRG sister stations also won national Edward R. Murrow awards. WJAR in Providence, Rhode Island won for Overall Excellence. WSLS in Roanoke, Virginia won for Spot News for day one coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings.

The awards will be presented at the RTNDA Awards Dinner on October 13, 2008, in New York.
